Utah's National Parks: Zion, Bryce and Red Canyon

Southern Utah is home to many national parks and monuments, among them Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Red Canyon (a state park), and the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The north rim of the Grand Canyon is close by in northern Arizona. While in Kanab, we had the pleasure of visiting three of these sites: Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon and Red Canyon. |
Zion National Park
We drove through Zion National Park one day on the way back from St. George, Utah. The road leads you high up into the mountains, winding alongside steep, angular walls, through tunnels carved out of rock, and around hairpin curves. Stark red and white cliffs and towers and deep canyon views are the reward for making the trip. I didn't have my camera with me, so took pictures with my cell phone. The shots are bit smaller than usual:

Red Canyon
An hour and a half north of Kanab lie Red Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Park. You pass through Red Canyon, part of the Dixie National Forest, on your way to Bryce. Red Canyon is known for its bright red sandstone formations and spires or "hoodoos." (The photo at the top left of the page is from Red Canyon.)

Bryce Canyon National Park
The last step of the Grand Staircase Escalante is Bryce Canyon National Park. Limestone spires and towers or "hoodoos," the result of centuries of erosion, fill the park, which contains many walking trails and majestic overlooks into the canyons. (The canyons are not really canyons at all, but actually a series of fourteen amphitheaters.) We arrived toward dusk, so some of the pictures are a bit dark, but the grandeur and the glory still come through.
