Nature Trails May 2009 Mount Shasta, California |
This page features four nature preserves/trails in and around Mount Shasta City: Sisson Meadow, Elsa Rupp Nature Trail, Rainbow Ridge Trail, and Frog Pond (near the Larry Wehmeyer Environmental Education Area). The warmer weather brings lots of opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors! |
Sisson Meadow Sisson Meadow is a restored, 7.5 acre nature preserve in Mount Shasta City. Bordering Sisson Elementary School and the public library, it has year-round springs, wetlands, lush grasses, a pond, and offers a home and breeding grounds for local wildlife. A boardwalk and wooden benches make the meadow a pleasant place for strolling and observing wildlife. The restoration of Sisson Meadow is a project of the Siskiyou Land Trust. |

Rainbow Ridge Trail
In April my mother, Betsy Hunt, Margarita and I took a walk along the Rainbow Ridge trail, which starts just down the road from our property. It winds up to Rainbow Ridge, which overlooks our road and offers a distant view of Mount Shasta City. We didn't go to the top, but the lower part is a beautiful walk through cedars, pines and manzanita bushes

The Manzanita was in bloom!
On the way back, we visited our "neigh"-bors: Parvati the horse, Sonnet the sheep, and Sasha the Gordon Setter. They and their lovely human companions, Gary and Nicola, go for walks together along the road; it's fun to see them! Margarita likes to play with Sasha, and she LOVES Sonnet!

Frog Pond
In early May, Betsy, Margarita and I visited Frog Pond, which adjoins the Larry Wehmeyer Environmental Educational Area. It has a beautiful view of Mount Shasta:

It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including frogs, Mallards and Red-winged Blackbirds:

Frog Pond is on North Shore Road, which follows the north shore of Lake Siskiyou. We ended our day overlooking the lake:

Hope you enjoyed our nature photos! Thanks for visiting!
