Mount Shasta Spring

April 2009

Mount Shasta, California

Spring has arrived in Mount Shasta with the gentle blooming of crocuses and daffodils, the singing of birds, and the swift rush of mountain streams.

We are blessed to live across the street from Kaiser Meadow, a large tract of land which is home to a variety of wildlife. Canada Geese, frogs, Mallards, songbirds, Loons, and Sandhill Cranes fill the air with their voices. After encountering some Sandhill Cranes on a walk with Margarita, I decided to take some pictures!

Spring brings the return of migratory birds:

A Mallard and his mate share the meadow with these Canada Geese...

And then there are the Sandhill Cranes. You can listen to their calls here (scroll down the page to "Vocalizations"). We hear their Guard Call from our house!

We have heard Loons in the meadow; occasionally a Great Blue Heron passes through!

The creek flows through the meadow and heads back into the forest:

Wildflowers are in bloom...

And so are the trees! (These shots were taken in Mount Shasta City.)

Shasta Trinity National Forest

My mother, Betsy, our friend Ann, and I took a drive to nearby Shasta Trinity National Forest. We saw roaring creeks...

Waterfalls...

Colorful rocks...

and, of course, views of Mount Shasta!

Happy Spring!
