Photos From Home/Raptor Free Flight

November 16, 2006

Tucson, Arizona

I had some photos I wanted to share, but there were too many to email...so I decided to post them here. Happy viewing!

Around the house...

Sheba loves plants...

 ...and has conquered the fridge!

Why are these here?!

Jasper, thoughtful as always...

Misty grants a photograph!

Outdoor visitors:

A jackrabbit resting outside the kitchen window.

A mother dove built her nest in a tree next to the deck...

We had to be careful not to scare her away!

Even coyotes come by now and then!

Last weekend I visited the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, a zoo featuring native desert animals. From November through April they offer a raptor free-flight program, where you can witness owls, hawks and roadrunners flying under the care of a handler. We watched a group of Harris Hawks soar gracefully through the sky, some even skimming right over our heads! Harris hawks are one of the few raptors that hunt in family groups. Sometimes they perch on each others' backs to get a better view of their surroundings.

Flying overhead...

With a handler...

Eating...

Balancing...they like to face the wind when standing still.

Another handler and a hawk.

They flew right over our heads, sometimes just inches above!

Other museum friends:

Four javelinas resting...

Two coyotes...

...and a wild cardinal.

Views from the desert museum:

A saguaro skeleton. The "ribs" are used by native peoples for building. Can you spot the javelinas in the background (below the tree)?

That's all for now. Thank you for stopping by!
