Glorious Kanab!

October 2009

Kanab, Utah

In July 2009 we moved to Kanab, Utah, a small town near the Arizona border. We moved there to assist our friend Patricia Jepsen. Kanab is ringed by national parks, including the north rim of the Grand Canyon, and is a glorious place to visit and to live.

Pat passed unexpectedly in September, so we did not stay in Kanab long; we moved to Southern Oregon in November. But our memories of Kanab will always be filled with the incredible beauty and the wonderful people we met while we were there. Kanab, Utah is a special place!

The Vermilion Cliffs

Kanab is set against a backdrop of vermilion cliffs, the second step of the Grand Staircase Escalante. The first step is the Grand Canyon, to the south; the second step are the Vermillion Cliffs in and around Kanab; the third step are the White Cliffs (Elkhart Mountain Range) to the north of Kanab; and the fourth step are the pink cliffs found in Bryce Canyon National Park. Here are some photos of the vermilion cliffs around Kanab:

There are many hiking trails in and around town. One popular hiking spot is Pugh Canyon Trail. The red sandstone cliffs predominate:

There are lots of interesting rocks in the canyon:

Bunting Trail

Another good trail is the Bunting Trail, in the Ranchos section of town. It takes you to the top of the cliffs, where you can look out over the valley. Margarita and I did the hike late in the day, so the shots are a bit dark. We saw the sunset from the top!

The views were stunning:

And the sunset, beautiful!

Road to the Dump!

There are some trails off the dump road, near the quarry. The views are great there, too!

(The Elkhart Mountains are in the background.)

Hope you enjoyed a taste of Kanab!
