Gilbert Creek & Plant Life

February 2010

Grants Pass, Oregon

These shots were taken in the area where I live, near the Rogue River.

***Camera update: Apparently my camera is not broken, it just has trouble focusing in low-light settings. Of course, most of Grants Pass qualifies as a "low-light setting" during this time of the year! But I am still using this camera for now.

Gilbert Creek

Gilbert Creek runs through town on its way to the Rogue River:

It joins the river not far from our house (below left). Margarita and I cross the creek at the narrow spot (below right) when we walk along the riverbank.

Rocks and bubbles!

Plant Life

There is so much moisture in Grants Pass, plants grow everywhere. It makes for some interesting combinations!

Ivy is plentiful. These pictures were taken at the preschool where I work:

Of course, moss is still boss, overtaking everything in its path...

This fence hosts a variety of mosses and lichens:

FUN-gus!

We found this log covered in brown and white Turkey Tail fungus along the river. It provided some great photo opportunities!

Mushroom Mania!

These tiny and exotic-looking bird's nest mushrooms appeared in our garden. They have an interesting series of life stages!

Stage 1 is a puffy yellow ball that looks like a cupcake
Stage 2: the top of the ball ("lid") breaks down, revealing the eggs or "peridioles" inside the nest
Stage 3: the peridioles wait for raindrops to disperse them. When raindrops fall into the nest, they "splash out" the eggs, which are attached to the nest by tiny threads. The threads stretch and break free, traveling with the eggs. They then reattach to the surface where the eggs land.
Stage 4: the empty brown nest

This picture shows Stages 1, 3 and 4:

Stage 2, the lid breaking down, can be seen in the center of this picture. Notice the eggs on the leaf to the left:

The mushrooms are each about the size of a pencil eraser (or smaller). There are lots of them!
