Frogs

Last summer this tiny Pacific Tree Frog appeared in our yard. It was about an inch long.

Another evening, this toad perched on our screen door. He was waiting for bugs by the porch light!

Snails and Slugs

Since moving to our new house in October 2010, we have had some interesting visitors:

(This shot was taken at night.)

A cool fact about snails and slugs: they can pull their eyes in and out of their heads!

Notice the eyeballs at the end of their "optic tentacles" in the pictures below:

(Hiding in its shell...)

Garter Snake

One day Sheba found this garter snake in the driveway. She was gently sniffing his head! When I began taking pictures, he slithered away...

...but not before I got a picture of his bright red tongue!

Redwood Wetland Habitat

The elementary school near our house has a wetland area with a community walking path. The wetland has 2 ponds, birdhouses, a pole nesting site, benches, a bridge and a viewing platform with interpretive signs. Margarita and I visit it often.

What a wonderful way for children to learn about the natural world!

There are lots of birds:

Red-wing Blackbird

Killdeer

Mallard Hen and Ducklings

What are those funny bumps in the water?

Bullfrogs!

They go "EEEP" and dive under the water when we walk by!

Final Bug Shots: Caterpillars and Spiders!

Pacific Tent Caterpillar

Fall Webworms

Orb Weaver Spider

Jumping Spider
