Brookings-Harbor, Oregon

July 2010

Southwestern Oregon Coast

We took a day trip with friends to Brookings, on the southern Oregon coast. We attended a kite festival near the harbor, and walked along the beach.

Here are the shots!

The Harbor

The harbor was small, but packed with boats:

Overlooking it are some nice homes. A jetty runs along one side:

Some of the rocks were bright green!

Wild radishes grew around the jetty. The pink ones looked like stained glass:

Views of the coastline from the jetty:

Waterbirds

Seagulls, cormorants and pelicans live in the harbor. Cormorants are diving birds, but their wings are not waterproof. They have to spread them out to dry. See the cormorant on the right:

And the one on the left below. Can you spot the pelican on the rocks behind?

Of course, sea gulls are everywhere!

Beach Walk

After watching the kite festival, we walked along the beach. The fog had burned off, and the sky was blue!

I was determined to get some pictures of waves breaking:

One spot in particular drew my attention. It was an offshore boulder where the waves crashed in big sprays. I wanted to catch one in action!

Like most digital cameras, mine has a delay before it takes the picture. I needed to anticipate the size of the wave (the small ones didn't spray) and the timing of when it would hit. Then I needed to press the button a bit ahead. I was determined to get a shot!

Here are the first few attempts:

A wave approaches....

But I catch it too late...

Another good wave, too late...

A little splash!

This is more like it....

Got it!!

The Cove

We came to a cove with a "hole" at the bottom of the cliff. During low tide, you can walk right through. While we were there, it was mostly covered by waves:

Shots of the cove:

The cove is bounded by a rocky cliff with streams trickling down the side. Some were covered in slime!

Wildflowers bloomed in the cracks and crevices:

I hope you enjoyed our "trip to the beach"!

Come again soon!
